EMBODIMENT CHRONICLES
2019
Video art
‘Embodiment Chronicles’ unfolds as a series of mirage-like visions, featuring fictive characters set in unfamiliar landscapes, juxtaposed with the motif of contemporary digital apparatus. The video sets out the dichotomy – or correlation – between technology and our access to alternate forms of existence and embodiment. The metaphysical understanding of “embodiment” as the act of occupying/personifying is increasingly prevalent in our digital age, with the development of the metaverse and expansion of the virtual “space” creating stages for the actualisation of multiple selves which can exist simultaneously in physical and virtual space. This paradigm is made apparent when the protagonist is revealed to be wearing a virtual reality headset, which contrasts her rooted physical existence with her virtual potential. What are the world-building possibilities of imagining presence beyond the physical, beyond our bodies, and could a better Future World be imagined and modelled through these means?
