SELF CONTAINED ARCHIVES

2018
Installation / Performance

What do we see when faced with our reflection?

This immersive installation examines the complexity of self-perception, exploring the tension between objective reality and subjective experience. As humans, we are independent, self-archiving entities, shaped by our unique memories, emotions, and associations, which influence how we perceive the world—and ourselves. Yet, we often struggle to view ourselves with true objectivity.

The piece invites viewers into a shipping container divided by a double-sided mirror. One side houses the audience, while the other is occupied by performers. The space is designed to appear symmetrical, with identical light and sound setups on both sides, distinguished only by a single chrome ball placed on the performers' side.

By carefully mapping light and controlling the transparency of the double-sided mirror, the installation creates a shifting visual experience. The viewers' sightlines oscillate between their own reflections and the performers on the opposite side, producing an illusion that blurs the boundaries between self and other.

Over the course of a 15-minute sequence, this interplay of reflection and revelation immerses the audience in a shared visual and emotional narrative. The work challenges the conventional roles of performer and viewer, offering a profound meditation on perception, identity, and the fluidity of reality.
